While we unfortunately don’t have a new filthy mix for ya to jam out to this weekend, we’ll have the duo known as Jack Beats step in and satisfy all your beat-beating needs with their recent Radio 1 Essential Mix.
Essential Mix (20-02-2010)- Jack Beats by Dooz Le Witz
Jack Beats is the amalgam of two champion turntable prodigies–Niall Dailly a.k.a. “DJ Plus One” of Scratch Perverts and Ben Geffin a.k.a. “Beni G” of the Mixologists. Considered as revolutionaries within the realm of electronic dance music, Jack Beats stands at the forefront of the new wave of British house music which features such elements as wobble-bass, dubstep, and breakbeat. They are also notorious for bringing a frenzied genre of club music called, “fidget house” to the masses. Check out a brief interview of Jack Beats from Spinner at SXSW this year:
Describe your sound in your own words.
BG: A style of house which is a melting pot of various types of bass music, old and new, from hip-hop, dubstep and drum’n'bass to techno and rave.
How did your band form?
ND: We’ve been friends for many years, and having both produced music separately for many years, decided to one day collaborate and try doing music together. It worked really well, so we just starting making tunes we really wanted to, without limitations.
What are your musical influences?
ND: Things like hip-hop, minimal and early stuff from Switch and Jesse Rose, as well as band producers like Rick Rubin.
BG: A lot of early dance stuff, from late acid house to early 90′s hardcore and then jungle, hip-hop (until recently!), plus Rage Against The Machine and Rob Playford.
How did you come up with your band name?
ND: We were finishing an early release and still didn’t have a name and wanted to come up with something that would keep our identities secret, so we wanted a name that reflected that. We came up with the hip-hop term “jacking for beats”, which we then shortened to just “jack beats” as people would think it’s just one person, which some people still do, and that’s dope.
What’s your biggest vice?
BG: We both have an obsession with very unhealthy studio snacks. Oh, and Guinness.
Who was your first celebrity crush?
ND: Kylie Minogue.
BG: Kelly Lebrock in ‘Weird Science’.
Beatles or Stones?
Both: the Stones.
What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen or experienced while on tour?
ND: That’s a tough one. Last year we played a gig in LA for 20,000 people that got shut down. We saw half the LAPD and fire marshalls invade the arena and shut it down, with kids literally almost rioting.
